Lions and more

On Friday (January 7, 2011) Ron and I welcomed the sixth SLC Security Interim Manager to arrive during our 15 months in Africa. After spending some time in the office on Saturday we drove 30 minutes west to the Missionary Training Center in Roodepoort where we introduced him to MTC President and Sister Christensen and Johannesburg Mission President Poulsen.

Our next stop was a bit further northwest to the Lion Park for our third visit to a favorite game reserve close to Johannesburg. Our first encounter in the herbivore area was the shrill calling of this small bird.

The grassy rolling hills are home to zebra, Blesbok, giraffe and ostrich as photographed together in the second photo; also Springbok (fourth photo), Blue Wildebeest, Gemsbok, impala, and a variety of birds.

In the lion cub enclosure we fed a giraffe and ostrich, watched meerkats scurrying around together, viewed a baby giraffe, Blesbok and impala and petted snoozy baby lions. The giraffe's tongue is dark blue, long and soft.

We joined other cars in driving through three enclosures where prides of lions stroll amidst the cars and lounge along the roadside. It is an awesome sight to see these massive carnivores standing next to a car separated from the occupants by only a window.

  1. These photos are amazing! The kids loved seeing Grandma and Grandpa playing with lions; I told them "Grandpa took these pictures, he was standing right there!" And Nicole said, is that lion trying to bite him? No, but he could have. We love you!

  2. These are great pictures. I wonder what the temperature is like there. Warm and dry or warm and humid. Looks great.
